Winkel Community – Hees

Before Winkel’s were Winkel’s, they lived in a tiny community called Hees. The first ancestor with the name Winkel appears in 1660. He was born in Hoogeveen about three miles south of Hees.

The name “Voorhees” is the anglicised form of “van voor Hees” which means from “before” or “in front of” Hees.

Our great…grandfather Coert Albertse Van Voorhees resided near the front of the village of Hees.

I really want to visit this place and talk to the locals about the history. Until then, here are some pictures I got from Google Maps. It looks like a beautiful community.

Through a Dutch Door

The Van Voorhees Association wrote this book about thirty years ago. It tells about life in the Netherlands prior to 1660. Steven Coerte’s Van Voorhees immigrated to America in 1660 and they wanted to focus on his forebears in the Netherlands. Winkel’s are part of these forebears. You should consider purchasing it.
